Israeli Stall at Canberra Multicultural Festival

The Food and Dance Spectacular - the highlight of the Canberra Multicultural Festival - takes place this Saturday (6 February) and Sababa will represent Israel.

 

After last year's stall was a roaring success,  Sabbaba - a Bondi based cafe - is looking forward to supplying the public with their delicious falafel.

Ivri Lider to tour Australia

Israeli pop / rock sensation Ivri Lider has confirmed that he will tour Australia in February 2010.

To highlight Holocaust Memorial Day, Ambassador Yuval Rotem had an opinion editorial published in the Sydney Morning Herald -

 

"This week we celebrated Australia Day - a chance to look upon the history of the Australian nation, and a salute to those Australians who are working to further develop and enhance the Australian people. It is an annual opportunity to reflect on the inclusive, motivated, enlightened culture Australia has created, and also a reminder that there is still more work to be done, to ensure this is proud heritage is upheld for the next generation.

Israel sends aid to Haiti

A 220-person delegation, headed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, departed   on Thursday 14 January 2009 for Port-au-Prince

 

Israel wishes to express its solidarity with the Government and people of Haiti during this great disaster. We send our condolences to the families of the casualties, and wish the in­jured a speedy recovery.

 

Israel is doing all in its power to help the people of Haiti cope with the disaster in their coun­try. A 220-person delegation, headed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, departed on Thursday 14 January 2009 for Port-au-Prince on two Boeing 747 jets leased from El Al by the Israeli Defence Force. The relief package includes a Home Front Command field hospi­tal and rescue unit, as well as teams from Magen David Adom and Israel Police.

 

Israel's ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Amos Radian, is currently in Port-au-Prince, where he is coordinating Israel's contribution with local authorities and international aid agencies.

UPDATE: The Israeli delegation is on the ground in Haiti setting up a hospital and continuing search and rescue operations.

To date;

• 383 people have been treated in the hospital, among them dozens of children
• 140 life-saving operations have been performed
• 60 patients are currently hospitalized
• 7 babies have been born in the hospital

Israeli awarded Nobel Prize

The Embassy of Israel congratulates Prof. Ada Yonath on receiving the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry and is proud of her scientific achievements. We are delighted that the Nobel Prize committee has recognized the significance of Prof. Ada Yonath’s scientific research and awarded her this important prize.

 

Prof. Yonath’s research is driven by curiosity and ambition to better understand the world and our place within it. This research aims high: to understand one of the most complicated "machines" of the biological system.
